When I was asked to design this year’s theme logo, I instantly envisioned Caribou antlers, “gūdzį̄hdéʼ” The Caribou is a significant part of our lifestyle, we have relied on the caribou since millennia. Respectfully, I wanted to tie in the importance of our relationship to the animals and to what they provide for us. This is why I chose the connection we have to our caribou skin drums our heartbeat featured alongside the antlers. “Eyeli” (Mountain Slavey) The drum has been an essential part of our lifestyle, we pray with the drum, we celebrate and have ceremony with the drum. The “Yūkā” northern lights has been a healing aspect of my journey in arts, it’s a reminder that the creator is always watching over us, our ancestors are with us and their prayers are still guiding us. I also wanted to bring awareness to the importance of storytelling, our legends and prophecies by including the “ Yūkā” and the stars with our star people (són dena) in mind. Lastly, most importantly, I wanted to honour my late grandmother Eva Etzel (my inspiration) and all of our grandparents by adding my grandmothers embroidered flowers by carefully placing them in the picture as if they were stars in the sky amongst the northern lights.
